The President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, visited APAV on the March 8th, for the occasion of the International Women's Day. In his speech, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reinforced the importance of the work carried out by APAV in supporting victims of crime, and also expressed the desire to see APAV growing continuously in those support, prevention and awareness services offered to those who suffer violence and crime.

The President’s visit started with a tour at APAV’s head office, Victim Support Helpline – 116006 and Lisbon Victim Support Office, and ended up with a warm and motivating speech. In his speech President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa highlighted the importance of APAV’s work for more than 26 years on the support of victims of every crime in Portugal, with emphasis on the service that APAV provides to the Portuguese society as a whole.

The President took the opportunity to mention the award received by APAV with the degree of Honorary Member of the Order of Liberty and, two-years past, express on behalf of the Portuguese the gratitude for all of APAV’s work on giving voice to the silence of victims in Portugal. More than a recognition of APAV’s past work, the President emphasised that the award should be seen as an incentive for the future

Because it was the International Women’s Day, the President of the Republic also made an important note on the severe statistics of domestic violence and the continuous effort and work that still has to be done for this victims in Portugal and worldwide, being APAV the civil society organisation of reference in tackling and supporting the victims of this phenomenon.

The Portuguese Victim Support Association, as the largest national nonprofit organization supporting victims of all crimes, contributes to the analysis and knowledge of crime and victimization by presenting its Annual Report 2016 | APAV Statistics. The statistical data now available refer to the support processes developed in person, by telephone and online, in 2016, by the 23 proximity services of APAV: through the national network of Victim Support Offices, through the Victim Support Line (116 006), the Shelters national network and the specialized networks.

An analysis of the highlights of this report makes it possible to assess the different contexts of victimization, in particular the different types of victims. As the 1,009 elderly people (+65 years) victims of crime (on average 3 per day and 19 per week); 826 children and young people (an average of 2 per day and 16 per week); 5,226 adult women (averaging 14 per day and 100 per week); and 826 adult men (on average 2 per day and 16 per week). In the scope of training and awareness and prevention of violence and crime, 732 training activities were conducted, covering 32,239 trainees / participants.

The international campaign Free Yourself - Healing Families; Ending Domestic Violence is raising funds to develop a digital platform to provide information and connectivity to victims of domestic violence from around the world, as well as 200 NGO affiliate partners and their employees who represent over 68 countries. The platform will include a fully responsive Website as well as iOS and Android based apps for Mobile to maximise user access and device coverage.

The Portuguese Victim Support Association inaugurated on the April 3rd, 2017 a new specialized support unit, the Support Unit for the Migrant Victim (UAVM) of Vila Franca de Xira. This new APAV support service counts on the co-financing of FAMI - Fundo para o Asilo, a Migração e a Integração, whose target group are nationals of third countries.

The Migrant Victim Support Unit is a unit that specializes in supporting migrant citizens who are victims of crime and citizens who are victims of discrimination. The aim of UAVM is to respond to the problems of these target audiences, which, given their special vulnerability, are the preferred targets of various types of crime and who lack specialist support. Some of the most common problems are: situations of sexual exploitation, work or employment fraud, extortion or subtraction of documents, non-payment of wages, threats, injuries, discrimination in tenancies and commercial establishments, among many other situations.
